The Bealtaine Living Earth Festival is a partnership of groups interested in Celebrating our Living Earth in the Southeast of Ireland and is coordinated by Calmast. Waterford IT through Calmast offers a wide range of science, technology, engineering and maths programmes for schools in the Southeast, attracting over 12,000 visitors to four annual festivals: Maths Week Ireland, Robert Boyle Science Week, The Robert Boyle Summer School, Engineering Week and Bealtaine Living Earth Festival.

Monday May 23rd

What do you see? There is more to a tree!

11:00-12:00   PRIMARY 4th to 6th class

Presenter: JFK Arboretum Guides, Office of Public Works

Location: JFK Arboretum, meet at Flagpoles outside visitor centre

Come along to this guided tour and discover the many habitats that trees provide.  Trees are havens for biodiversity and provide a diverse range of habitats for many creatures.

Wastewater Treatment and the aquatic environment

Students will be introduced to wastewater treatment and learn about the importance of wastewater treatment in safeguarding water quality. They will get the chance to explore stream life and see how life adapts to the aquatic environment.

Rockpool Exploration

Wet your curiosity and feed your enquiring mind by exploring the rocky shoreline and experience the amazing habitats of our coast. The Oceanics team run guided Eco Hikes in association with Discovery Primary Science, through a range of surrounding ecosystems. This Rockpool Exploration celebrates biodiversity where students enjoy hands on outdoors science in a fun and interactive way!

Biodiversity Workshop

Presenter: Ella Ryan, Waterford City and County Council

Location: Kilbarry Nature Park, meet at information sign to the right of the carpark

The nature park provides an ideal opportunity for this interactive walk to explore nature and biodiversity within Waterford City. It encompasses an integrated wetland, wildflower meadows, Kilbarry Bog and all this on a remediated landfill! What better place to talk about waste, wildlife and habitats in one outing! Pupils will participate in identification tasks, nature hunts and more.
